Laguna Engobes

ms101-l.jpg

These richly colored slips can be applied texturally, as a smooth contrasting base for sgraffito, or with a brush to greenware. Fired to Cone 5 they become vitreous. Ideal for accentuating the natural color of the clay and for adding decorative accents. These engobes do not contain lead and are safe for food and beverage containers when properly fired. Note: An engobe and a slip are similar, and sometimes people mix them up. A slip is colored clay, while an engobe also has a small amount of flux added which makes it melt slightly, like a glaze. It is part way between a slip and a glaze.

Laguna recommends testing glazes on test tile with your clay body before use in art or production.

Most of the lead free Cone 5 glazes offer are formulated to be fired in oxidation. Each has its own distinct surface quality, which will change in relation to the clay body you choose and method of application you employ. If you find the glaze is too thick straight from the container, Laguna recommends portioning what you intend to use into another container and thinning with water to the desired consistency. Always test your application and firing method when using new glazes and clay bodies.
