Constellation Glazes

sea-mist-over-coffee.jpg

These Constellation Glazes are specifically designed to take advantage of the controlled cooling process to produce macro-crystals without a special crystal firing, it can be fired in the same kiln as all your favorite colors. At the same time, these glazes are designed to shine in any regular cone 6 firing.

For slow cool, most modern electric kilns are less insulated than their gas fired counterparts, resulting in a quick cooling cycle that prevents many glazes from developing the richness they might otherwise have. Iron reds, crystaline glazes and others NEED to be slow cooled to achieve their best effects. These glazes also look great in regular firings, too. A slow cooling maximizes the growth of crystals, but it's not required to make the glazes work at all.

By programming your automatic kiln to Coyote's recommended firing schedule, many of the Coyote glazes you already use may look better too. Coyote has not found any glazes that look worse in a slow-cooled firing than they do in a regular firing.

Coyote's Recommended Firing Schedule
Raise temperature at 100° per hour to 220°F
Raise temperature at 350° per hour to 2000°F.
Raise temperature at 150° per hour to 2200°F and HOLD for 15 minutes.
LOWER temperature at 500° per hour to 2150°F and HOLD for 15 minutes.
LOWER temperature at 125° per hour to 1400°F.
Below 1400°F, allow the kiln to cool normally.

Most Constellation Glazes will change color when exposed to acidic foods and are not recommended for food use. Autumn Spice, Mars Iron Red, Light Gold, and Summer Spice are suitable for food.
